Have you ever wondered how Koreans have mastered the art of relaxation? Look no further than the jjimjilbang—a space where centuries of tradition meet modern wellness. For expats and military families living in South Korea, these bathhouses offer not just a retreat from the stress of daily life but a window into the country’s cultural heart.
Korean bathhouses have existed for centuries, evolving with societal needs from the Joseon dynasty to the present day. Originally, they served as communal places of relaxation and hygiene, but today, they have developed into the modern jjimjilbang or “heated room” facility. In the 1980s, while Korea was experiencing rapid economic growth and urbanization, people desired a space that could cater to the need to unwind after a long work week. Therefore, the bathhouses grew into spaces that allowed patrons to bask in the heated rooms, take a rest, grab a quick snack, and entertain themselves. By the 2000s, jjimjilbangs had become an icon of Korean culture, cemented in the minds of tourists through K-dramas and films as the place where families and friends bonded and relieved their stress. While COVID-19 forced many bathhouses to close or readjust their amenities, jjimjilbangs remain an integral part of Korean culture and offer a fantastic way to unwind, especially during the frigid winter months!
It took me five years of living in Korea to muster the courage to enter a sauna, but once I did, I never looked back. My reluctance stemmed from my American upbringing, where communal nudity wasn’t part of the norm. The idea of being exposed to strangers was not my idea of relaxation. As a foreigner, I was already used to standing out in Korea; I wasn’t eager to do so on such an intimate level. However, the idea of leaving Korea without experiencing this cultural cornerstone seemed unthinkable. So, I joined two friends at Spa Land, one of Korea’s most iconic jjimjilbangs in Busan.
As nervous as I was, I quickly realized the experience was far less intimidating than I had imagined. Was it a bit awkward to suddenly be wearing no clothes? Of course. But instead of feeling self-conscious and like a spectacle, I felt a level of kinship with the women who surrounded me. We are constantly inundated by images of what society deems as the “perfect” body. In a world saturated with unattainable beauty standards, seeing people of all shapes, ages, and sizes reminded me of the beauty of real bodies. For those hesitant to try, this is your reminder: stepping out of your comfort zone often leads to the most rewarding experiences.
While the trip to your neighborhood sauna can be an adventure, there are numerous health benefits that you can reap with repeated sessions. Want to boost your heart health? Try a dry sauna, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and hypertension. Struggling with nasal congestion or dull skin? Exposure to herbal or steam rooms is great for the respiratory system and can promote a healthy skin glow. Those with inflammation or in need of a good detox should aim for infrared saunas- designed to heat the body directly rather than the air- making it a perfect choice!
But to maximize these benefits, it is best to follow a few guidelines. Just as you would before a day at the beach or a hike, be sure to hydrate prior to, during, and after your visit to make up for the amount you will sweat. Start with shorter sessions (10-20 minutes) and gradually increase the time as your body adjusts. Cool down in between rooms, especially if moving to a higher heat. For the brave few, if you can withstand the cold, immerse yourself in a cold pool or shower after your heat sessions to truly stimulate circulation and maximize your recovery. A trip to the jjimjilbang isn’t just relaxing—it’s an investment in your well-being.
